This is an event open only to sighthound breeds. Its purpose is to
simulate an actual hunt, and
the hounds are judged on the hunting ability they exhibit. Usually, a
plastic bag (the "bunny") is drug around an open field on a line.
The line is strung around a network of pulleys to make it look like the course a
fleeing rabbit would take. Hounds are released in heats of three and
judged. There are two major organizations in America that hold lure
coursing trials. They are: AKC, and ASFA (American Sighthound Field
Association.) The following tables elaborate.
| SPEED | How fast is the hound compared to other members of its breed? |
| ENDURANCE | Does the hound finish the course as strong as it began? |
| AGILITY | How does it corner? recover from slips? etc. |
| FOLLOW | Is it actually coursing the "bunny?" |
| ENTHUSIASM | Does it show the instinct and heart necessary of a hunting hound? |
In AKC coursing, "Overall Ability" is substituted for "Enthusiasm." The rest is the same.
